In a region deeply affected by conflict, we are providing tangible support to women, children, and vulnerable communities in the Kémo Prefecture through a project that integrates protection, resilience, and peaceful coexistence.
In the Kémo Prefecture, located in the heart of the Central African Republic, years of armed conflict have devastated local communities, undermining access to essential services and leaving women and children particularly vulnerable to violence and marginalisation. To address the growing need for protection, INTERSOS has launched a new project titled “Improving the protective environment and resilience of women, children at risk, and vulnerable persons in the Kémo Prefecture of the Central African Republic”.
Funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), the project was officially launched on 14th November in Sibut during an event attended by local authorities from the Kémo Prefecture (Sibut, Ndjoukou, Dékoua, Mala), and AICS representatives. The primary goal of the initiative is to ensure protection for women and children, while also promoting peaceful coexistence between internally displaced persons and host communities.
The project specifically aims to provide survivors of gender-based violence with access to appropriate psychological, socioeconomic, and legal services. At the same time, it seeks to strengthen peaceful coexistence and shared responsibility among displaced persons, people in transit, and host communities, with particular focus on women and children. During the launch event, projections and discussions helped participants better understand the project’s objectives and expected outcomes.
Among the key expected results, the project plans to provide holistic support to 215 survivors of gender-based violence (including 118 women, 75 girls, 15 boys, and 7 men), distribute dignity kits to 300 survivors of sexual violence (200 women and 100 girls) and other women and girls at risk, and provide socio-economic reintegration support for 120 vulnerable women and girls through the empowerment of 4 women’s associations. Additionally, 20 survivors will be referred to quality legal services, and 40 service providers will receive training on case management and survivor support.
Since 2023, INTERSOS has been operating in the Kémo Prefecture with the financial support of the Humanitarian Fund of the Central African Republic. This project marks another step in our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable individuals and building a resilient future for affected communities.
