INTERSOS intervention for the prevention of COVID-19 in contexts of social exclusion becomes EWSI good practice

During 2020, the INTERSOS teams in Italy developed and tested a system for the prevention and management of COVID-19 infections in contexts of social marginalisation, where the most fragile and most difficult to reach people by the Health System live. From the countryside of Foggia and Sicily, to Ionian Calabria to the city of Rome, we intervened in support of the health authorities to prevent outbreaks of contagion and to bring people closer to the Health System in fact excluded from access to public health.

The impact of our intervention in informal rural settlements as well as in urban ones and in housing occupations has created positive paths of dialogue between communities and health authorities, setting the stage for greater integration and inclusion of the marginalised population, both migrant and Italian.

Today, just over a year from the start of the intervention, our COVID-19 programme becomes part of the Good Practices reported by EWSIEuropean Web Site on Integration, the information source of the European Union in theme of integration, multiculturalism and the fight against discrimination. An important result that comes from the knowledge of the context that we gained over several years of working in Italy, but also from the commitment and collaboration between the public, private social and communities involved.
